To New Students
New students are welcome to come visit our class on any Tuesday evening at 7:45PM. On your first visit to Tai Chi Kung Fu of Long Island, you are invited to simply observe the class. This visit is free of charge and gives you an opportunity to see what goes on at our school. Not every Tai Chi class is right for everybody. If you choose to come back again, please arrive at about 7:40PM so that we can start teaching you the Tai Chi form step by step promptly at 7:45PM.
You will receive detailed instruction at a pace that is right for you regardless of age, fitness level or experience. For the rest of the class (from 8:00-9:45PM) you are free to join us in what we are doing, work on what you've been shown or just watch and enjoy. You are expected to work on the piece of the form that you were shown at home so that when you come back the next week we can make minor corrections to what you've worked on at home and give you the next piece to work on.
At 8:00 PM, the entire class will go through two rounds of the Cheng Man Ching Tai Chi Form. This takes about twenty to twenty five minutes. This is a slow, concentrated, meditative, full body workout. After form work, we move on to push hands (partner work) and sword work.
Every now and then we work on the martial application of specific movements, engage in light sparring and discuss the philosophical aspects of Tai Chi. You will find that this is a well rounded Tai Chi class with an emphasis on Tai Chi as a martial art and a method of strengthening and stretching the body.
Please understand that although Tai Chi can be a relaxing exercise, it demands hard work, concentration and practice at home between classes.
It is strongly recommended that you download our Cheng Man Ching Tai Chi Form Video from the videos page of this web site so that you have a video reference to study in between classes. The video teaches exactly what you will be shown in class.
