                           T’ai Chi Etiquette

There is an appropriate way to behave when you enter a T’ai Chi school.  You bow upon entering, leaving and each time you are about to begin or finish working with another person.  The bow is a simple gesture that shows respect, humility and good will.  The bow is performed by simply making a fist with the left hand, covering it with the right hand, holding the joining hands a bit in front of the chest and making a small bowing gesture forward.

A polite and sincere attitude should be exhibited at all times.  You are a part of a very special group of people.  You are all learning a very ancient, highly regarded physical art.  Only students of the highest character have been “let in” to study this fascinating art in the past.  Leave your temper and ego at home.  Treat everyone as an honored guest when they are in your presence.

Wear appropriate clothing.  Wearing any old thing to class shows a lack of respect for others, the art of T’ai Chi, and our school.  Help make this experience a positive one by

Keeping yourself and your clothing clean will also help to create the kind of atmosphere that is most conducive to learning.

Focus on what we are doing as a class.  Try to keep side conversations down to a minimum.  We are all here for our own reasons, but we must respect others around us.  It can be very distracting when someone is joking and goofing around during an exercise that requires concentration.

Most importantly, enjoy T’ai Chi.  This art will bring you rewards that you’ve never dreamed of.  T’ai Chi is truly an art of limitless potential.  Use each class as a time to relax, work hard and have some fun.  What will happen is that you start to experience a deeper sense of relaxation, peace and joy in your every-day life.  Even work, relationships and other challenges seem to become easier to handle as you learn to balance Yin and Yang!
